Pizza lovers and robot enthusiasts are in for an interesting time this week. Pizza Hut is apparently testing out delivery robots at select locations in Vancouver, and you could be one of the first customers to receive your pizza order via robotic delivery.

The national chain is partnering with Serve Robotics, a leading autonomous sidewalk delivery company to test out the two-week pilot program, according to a press release. From now until September 30th, Vancouver customers who order through the Pizza Hut app could have their fave menu items delivered to their doorstep via robot.

“Pizza Hut is thrilled to be at the forefront of this technology and partner with Serve Robotics to bring this offering to Canada for the first time,” says Manish Dhankher, Director of Operations at Pizza Hut Canada.

How it works

Participating in the pilot program is the Pizza Hut location on 1725 Robson Street. Select customers can then use the Pizza Hut app to track the robot’s location as their order approaches – similar to how other delivery apps like Uber Eats and DoorDash operate.

Once your order arrives, you will receive a unique, one-time pin to pick up your order from “the robot’s secure compartment.”

Serve Robotics promises convenience, reliability, and “zero-emissions robotic delivery,” according to the release. The company’s technology uses a “range of sensors to identify nearby objects,” which allows the robots to navigate sidewalks while under the close eye of their human supervisors.

“This signals an exciting step forward for the future of delivery technology in Canada,” added Dhankher. “We’re confident Vancouverites will not only experience delight in having a robot deliver their food, but will also find this complements Pizza Hut’s existing delivery service.”

The pilot program will be in effect until Friday, September 30th. You can stay up-to-date with the future of the program on Pizza Hut Canada’s socials.
