Have you ever wondered what a street party would look like on a bridge? Well, you might not have to wonder for too much longer. An exciting proposal was just put forth by New West city councillor Daniel Fontaine, and the Pattullo Bridge could transform into the ultimate street party this summer!
The motion for a “three-day Pattullo party” was passed on Monday, May 8th, which would the “iconic” bridge up to pedestrians sans traffic one last time before it’s torn down.

The Pattullo Bridge replacement project is expected to be completed in 2024, creating a new four-lane, toll-free bridge with wider, safer lanes and designated walking and cycling lanes.
Once the new bridge is open to traffic, the 86-year-old bridge will officially be taken down. So this could be your chance to say goodbye to the historic city landmark.
“If the bridge were to be closed down and decommissioned to allow the public an opportunity to walk or cycle across it, they’d get to experience the views of the Fraser River and Golden Ears that most of us have only seen from behind the wheel,” said Councillor Fontaine during the city council meeting.
“I’d love to see some food trucks there, and families from all sectors of society on the Pattullo Bridge one last time to say goodbye.”
As well, the celebration would give residents a way to recognize the lives lost and harmed on the bridge, as per an amendment put forth by Councillor Jaimie McEvoy.
Specifics on food and beverage and live entertainment are to be determined, but the Council will now enter discussions with the Ministry of Transportation on how to best move forward. Mayor Patrick Johnstone will write a letter on their behalf to hopefully make this “community-based celebration” a reality!
So there you have it, Vancouver. Fingers crossed all goes well and we get to party on the Pattullo Bridge this summer!
