If you’re considering a career change in the new year, you can set your sights on one of the many in-demand jobs in Ontario right now.

In an interview with Curiocity, Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton said that now is “an exciting time for workers who want to move upwards in their careers.”

“There are huge opportunities out there for people,” said the Minister. “Now is the time to seize the opportunity because there are nearly 400,000 jobs going unfilled.”

According to McNaughton, the sectors that are most in-demand are the skilled trades and healthcare.

By the end of the decade, the province will be short 100,000 skilled trade workers in construction alone, which McNaughton called a “looming crisis.”

Namely, that includes carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and automotive technicians, but the need for talent extends to all areas of skilled trades.

By 2025, Ontario will be in need of 50,000 healthcare workers. Nurses and personal support workers (PSWs) are the most in-demand careers in the healthcare sector.

Big money is being spent to get people into these jobs. The province has put forward “historic” investments and is hosting career fairs for the first time ever, in an effort to get more young people into skilled trades.

There are also big needs in the tech sector. According to the Minister, Ontario is in need of more talent in the cloud computing and cyber security spaces.

Some job-seekers can even train for a new career for free and get up to $28,000 in financial aid to cover their expenses while they study.

The program is called Better Jobs Ontario and it’s designed to help individuals who are unemployed or live in a low-income household.

If you qualify, there are a variety of programs you can sign up for that are less than one year long and by the end of it, you could land a new job with an impressive starting salary.

According to McNaughton, the cyber security training certificate program is 10 months long, and the starting salary is $80,000 per year.

You can also be trained for a career in cloud computing in 12 months and the salary is “north of $70,000 per year.”

You can see a list of all the training programs through Better Jobs Ontario here, and find out if you qualify here.

Whether you’re just starting out in the workforce or are ready for a fresh start, it seems like our province is the perfect place to be.
