There’s a Japanese garden in an Alberta city that was once visited by a princess

Alberta has many claims to outdoor fame. But with this stunning Japanese garden, we can really say we have it all. Nestled in Lethbridge, the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden is a hidden gem rife with cultural heritage.

Established in 1967, the garden was built to recognize contributions made by citizens of Japanese ancestry to the multicultural community of Lethbridge, Alberta, and as a symbol of international friendship.

The name itself comes from the Japanese words Ni from Nihon (meaning Japan), Ka from Kanada or Canada, and Yuko, which means “friendship.”

“Nikka Yuko expresses the merging of Japanese and Canadian cultures in a garden rich in symbolism. It captures the signature of the southern Alberta landscape while simultaneously integrating traditional Japanese philosophy and symbols,” the website states.

Among the garden’s many visitors is the former Japanese Princess Ayako of Takamado. She visited the garden in 2017 as part of its 50th anniversary celebration.

What to expect

If you’re looking for an idyllic afternoon stroll, you really can’t do any better than the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden. Take it at your own pace or participate in one of their daily public tours.

Meander along groomed pathways and over bridges as you take in the waterfall, stream, reflective pond, and meadow. You can also expect meticulously pruned foliage, spring flowers, stone lanterns, and a teahouse.
