Burnaby is getting a FREE festival celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day

National Indigenous Peoples Day is today, June 21st, and the City of Burnaby is celebrating with a free festival honouring the work of Indigenous artists, performers, and storytellers. Want to support local art and learn more about the Indigenous cultures that created them? Keep reading!

“On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize and honour Indigenous Peoples and the incredible contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis people across this land,” says Mayor Mike Hurley. “This is an opportunity for our entire community to come together to celebrate and learn about Indigenous people and culture, and to recognize the importance of working towards reconciliation.”

Visitors can expect to see a variety of performances, including traditional dance, spoken word, and storytelling – as well as peruse local artisans:

• Skwew Singers featuring Shakti Hayes from the Cree Nation, joined by Métis singer Sandy Scofield and Cree singer Kelsey Wavey
• Plains Cree poet/rapper and spoken word artist Tawahum
• Burnaby Art Gallery’s BAG on a Bike mobile printing station – custom commissioned plates by Jonas Jones
• Art activities featuring works from local Indigenous talent, Indigenous storytelling, Indigenous Artisans

The community event will take place at Edmonds Plaza and Park on Wednesday, June 21st from noon until 5 pm.
