The furthest northwest tip of the contiguous US is in Washington & here’s where to find it

If you’re in the mood to drive for a few hours, you can actually check out the farthest northwest tip of the contiguous United States. While that’s already pretty cool, it also happens to be incredibly beautiful. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Cape Flattery.

Cape Flattery is about a four-and-a-half-hour drive from the heart of Seattle. You get to enjoy the scenic Bainbridge Island ferry, then drive along the beautiful stretch of road that lines the north part of the Olympic Peninsula. So you’ll have no shortage of sights to see!

What makes this hike even better is that it’s actually highly accessible at 1.5 miles roundtrip. You’ll walk through the forest, onto a boardwalk, and navigate a ladder as you view the stunning point from all angles. Keep your eyes peeled for Cape Flattery reef, sea caves, and Kessiso Rocks. You’ll also probably catch a glimpse of seagulls, cormorants, and many other shorebirds. If you’re lucky you might even see whales or otters.

This hike is considered a bucket list hike for many Washingtonians and it’s for a good reason. So if you’re looking to see something truly special this summer, this might just be it. Keep in mind that the hike and land are managed by the Makah Tribe, who provides permits for parking at Washburn’s General Store and at the Cultural Center. Be sure to follow any and all rules that the Tribe has posted. Enjoy!
