BC is home to the ‘fastest tidal surge’ in the world & here’s how to view it

Did you know that BC is home to the fastest tidal rapids in the world? The Nakwakto Rapids can run up to 17 knots (roughly 31 km per hour) during peak tidal changes, making it nearly impossible for boats to travel through them!

Recognized as the fastest ‘tidal surge’ in the world, the rapids are forced through narrow channels and islands, creating a forceful tidal flow. According to Vancouver Island North Tourism, its narrowest point is at the mouth of the Seymour Inlet, where “Tremble Island” is known to shake with the force of the water surrounding it.

What’s more, these powerful rapids mark the gateway to hundreds of kilometres of remote coastline and wildlife running through the southern portion of the Great Bear Rainforest. So there’s plenty of incredible nature and wildlife to take in here!

Participants get to learn more about the Gwa’sala Nakwaxda’xw First Nations history while safely immersed in the rapids during times in which the tidal flow is accessible to boats.
