The coolest museums in Alberta you need to visit at least once

Alberta is home to some seriously cool museums, but not all of them look like your typical history stop. Across the province, you’ll find places dedicated to dinosaurs, UFOs, vintage vehicles, and even a Trek Station inspired by the iconic Star Trek series. The museums bring some of Alberta’s most unique history to life, with collections and exhibits you won’t find anywhere else.

We’ve rounded up five museums that deserve a spot on your must-visit list.

World Famous Gopher Hole Museum

You won’t find another spot quite like Torrington’s Gopher Hole. Inside this tiny museum, visitors can find tiny gophers dressed in miniature outfits and displayed in detailed dioramas that showcase scenes inspired by prairie life.

It’s important to note that this quirky spot is currently closed for most of July and August but will reopen on Heritage Day and during Labour Day weekend in September.

Royal Tyrell Museum

If dinosaurs are your thing, then the Royal Tyrell Museum need to be added to your bucket list immediately. This Drumheller museum is dedicated entirely to paleontology and features some of the most impressive dinosaur displays in Canada.

And while you’re in Drumheller, you can also explore the hoodoos and stop by the giant T. rex statue Tyra, which towers above the town and makes for a perfect photo op.

Vulcan Trek Station

Vulcan’s Trek Station brings a little bit of Star Trek history to southern Alberta. The spaceship-inspired visitor centre is filled with memorabilia, displays, and themed exhibits that showcase the town’s connection to the famous sci-fi series.

The attraction opened in 1998 as a community project to celebrate the town’s connection to space, science, and the popular franchise and has since become a must-stop for Albertans passing through the south end of the province.

Alberta Aviation Museum

Located inside a historic hangar in Edmonton, the Alberta Aviation Museum takes visitors through the province’s fascinating aviation history. The museum features more than 30 aircraft, along with displays that showcase the people and events that shaped aviation in Alberta.

Visitors have an opportunity to walk among the planes, check out flight simulators, and explore how aviation has played such a key role in our history.

Gasoline Alley Museum

Gasoline Alley Museum brings Alberta’s automotive history to life with a collection of vintage vehicles, restored gas stations and nostalgic road displays. The exhibits highlight how transportation has evolved over the decades, while showcasing some of Canada’s most impressive artifacts.
