This Ontario village with a historic downtown sits along a winding waterway

Sometimes you need a little break from the city, and I know just the place. Lakefield, Ont., is nestled along the Trent-Severn Waterway outside of Peterborough. The quaint village may be small, but it has plenty to see and do, and is particularly beautiful to visit this time of year.

Lakefield is about two hours from Toronto by car, a perfect distance for a one-day road trip.

The village is just 20 minutes outside of the picturesque Peterborough.

Things to do in Lakefield

To get a feel for what Lakefield is like, look no further than its tourism website.

“Lakefield has a gentler pace and friendly locals, inspiring people to visit for generations,” shares the sight.

The warm and inviting message is matched by the beauty and cozy feel when you arrive.

A portion of the Trent-Severn Waterway runs through the village’s historic downtown, which is filled with local shops and eateries.

One of the local favourite spots is the Canoe & Paddle — a pub known for delicious eats and live music.

Queen Street is where you’ll find adorable stops such as The Nutty Bean Café, The Loon, Lakefield Bakery, and Trinkets and Treasures.

Cycling

If you like hitting the bike trail, you’ll be happy to know that four of the Kawartha Classics Road Cycling Routes pass through Lakefield.

“The combination of rolling drumlin hills, scenic lake vistas, and winding rural roads makes for challenging and diverse riding opportunities,” shares Peterborough & the Kawarthas.

So, whether you’re hitting the trails or taking in the sights, sounds, and shopping of downtown Lakefield, you’re in for a great day, Ontario.
