This Ontario Park near Ottawa is a peaceful escape with scenic trails

J Henry Tweed Conservation Area is an outdoor oasis with 16 acres of land filled with trails. If you’re looking to escape the city streets and take in some clean country air, here’s why you should visit.

Now, let’s be real here – it’s not a day trip adventure if you’re in Toronto. The park is located in Russell, Ontario, about 30 minutes away from Canada’s capital.

But if you’re in the area, it doesn’t hurt to give it a little visit.

What is there to do at J Henry Tweed Conservation Area?

According to South Nation Conservation, the park links with the Russell Township New York Central Fitness Trail. It’s a converted railway that is perfect for cycling and rollerblading in the warmer months.

“Those interested in cycling or rollerblading, can access the Prescott and Russell Recreational Trail from the J. Henry Tweed trail, where they will find 72 kilometers of converted railway paths,” they add.

In the winter, the park is enjoyed by snowshoers and cross-country skiers along its well-groomed trails. But it truly is an all-season experience!

Thanks to the efforts of dedicated conservation initiatives, the park not only provides a scenic retreat for visitors but also maintains its natural beauty and ecological health. According to the SNC, the area experienced restoration projects up until 20212. These efforts included “native tree and shrub planting, repairing existing erosion and streambank stabilization, and restoring in-stream habitat to increase biodiversity.”

But that’s not all! The SNC also “resurfaced the park’s recreational trail, installed three new pedestrian bridges, restored sections of shoreline, and removed and replaced hundreds of dead and dying Ash Trees infected by the invasive Emerald Ash Borer.”

Clearly that’s a reason why it’s one of SNC’s most popular public parks. It welcomes over 20,000 visitors every year. So, if you ever find yourself near Russell, Ontario, take a moment to explore this charming conservation area, you just might discover your new favorite escape.
