This Ontario trail takes hikers along one-billion-year old rock formations

I don’t know about you but I didn’t even know it was possible for something that is one billion years old and still around to see! The Gut Lake trail does, taking hikers along paths with rock formations that came to be one billion years ago – pretty cool huh?

The Gut Lake Trail is found within Grundy Lake Provincial Park in Parry Sound, Ontario.

The shoreline of Gut Lake has stunning sights you’ll have to see to believe, showcasing the Precambrian rocks that are the bedrock of Grundy Lake.

This part of the trail displays rocks that were formed over one billion years ago “deep beneath the Earth’s crust, shaped by wind, water, and eventually glacial ice that sculpted and smoothed out the landscape over 14,000 years ago.”

While you’re strolling along the shoreline snap some photos of the formations! Fun fact, the glacial ice wore down the mountains that used to stand there and geologists think they may have been as high as the Rockie Mountains.

The trail is marked as moderate/difficult and spans 2.5 km (around an hour and a half to complete). If you’re going to embark on the hike be sure to dress accordingly with proper footwear, water and sunscreen!

Because Grundy Lake is an Ontario Park you’ll have to pay a day pass fee to check it out which starts at $12.25.

Spend a beautiful day exploring the Gut Lake Trail this summer, Ontario!
