Who’s ready to be transported to one of the most naturally breathtaking destinations in the country? The Gulf Islands National Park Reserve in British Columbia protects some of Canada’s rarest ecosystems, which thrive in the area’s Mediterranean-like climate.
With tons of sheltered bays to paddle to and shoreline trails to hidden coves and beaches, the only problem you’ll have here is choosing a place to start!
According to Parks Canada, many plants in the Gulf Islands are at the “northern extreme of their range” – meaning they’re not found anywhere else in the country.
This includes Garry oaks and arbutus trees, which support many of Canada’s most at-risk species, and are unique to this small area of BC.
The dominant ecosystem at the reserve, however, consists of Douglas firs, Balsam firs, and Western red cedars.
The vast diversity of the park means that visitors may encounter a wide range of wildlife. This includes everything from orcas, porpoises, sea lions, seals, and otters, to eagles, falcons, and hundreds of different migratory seabirds.
While prime visiting season is between May 15th and September 30th, visitors can still explore the islands and islets during the park’s “low season” from October 1st to May 14th – just without access to frontcountry camping!
Still looking to stay overnight? There are nine backcountry camping areas on eight islands and two drive-in campgrounds on Vancouver and North Pender Islands, both of which are open year-round.
There are over 15 breathtaking islands and islets to explore on the reserve, including Mayne, Saturna, and Pender Islands. Both can be reached via ferry from Swartz Bay in Victoria.
During the warmer months, visitors can take the Sidney Spit – a passenger ferry from the quaint town of Sidney.
The remaining islands of the reserve are accessible via kayak, powerboat, or sailboat, according to Parks Canada.
So there you have it, BC! An incredible adventure awaits those who are ready to embark on the trek there.
Happy exploring!
