Alberta is home to one of the most important dinosaur track sites in the world

Grande Cache, Alberta is a beautiful place, but there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Located five hours west of Edmonton, visitors are encouraged to hike, bike, fish, lounge, shop, and take pride in knowing that they’re following in the footsteps of prehistoric lizards, whose strides measured up to 10 feet long.

According to the Municipal District of Greenview, the area is home to one of the most important dinosaur track sites in the world—a 25-square-kilometre area in which dozens of tracks are embedded into the mountains.

“Among some of the Grande Cache area’s more interesting wildlife were huge meat-eating dinosaurs, which hunted the muddy shore,” they explain.

“Thankfully, these and a variety of other ‘terrible lizards’ are no longer permanent residents of the area. Fortunately, however, they left thousands of footprints behind.”

Want to visit?

This site was discovered in 2006 during local coal mining activities and has since been designated a Provincial Historical Site by the province of Alberta.

Unfortunately, because the area containing the tracks is privately leased, it is not accessible to the public, but dino-lovers who visit are not without a memorable experience.

If you’d like to roam with those who came long before us, you can visit the Grande Cache Tourism & Interpretive Centre.

Here, guests can take part in the “Cache In on Dino Discovery VR Experience,” an innovative adventure that brings the prehistoric world to life.

Want to stay for a good time and a long time? Grande Cache also has several incredible trails worth visiting, as well as some amazing landmarks, so take your time.

It’s a pretty impressive place!
