Alberta residents will get a test emergency alert this week & here’s what to know

Don’t be alarmed! This week, Alberta residents will get a test emergency alert on all compatible cellphones, websites, TVs, social media and radios, but here’s what you need to know in case you’re a tad jumpy (like we are.)

According to the provincial government, this particular alert will sound on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 at 11:55 am MST and will help officials fix any future system issues.

“While test alerts are issued nationwide twice a year in May and November, this year’s emergency alert in Alberta is being done now to coincide with the official start of wildfire season on March 1,” Mike Ellis, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services explained.

“Tests help us fix any system issues to ensure alerts work when we need them. Tests also provide a valuable opportunity for Albertans to consider their own readiness to respond to an unexpected event like a wildfire.”

If, of course, your phone is in silent mode, it will not play the alert tone – but expect it on all other devices connected to an LTE 4G network that doesn’t have the volume turned down.

“Since Alberta created the first emergency alert system in the country more than 30 years ago, the province has issued alerts to provide critical information about an immediate disaster, where it’s happening and what actions to take to stay safe,” said Ellis.

“Our top priority is saving lives and protecting Albertans.”
