Drinking in public parks might become a reality in Calgary this summer

It’s been a long time coming, but drinking alcohol in public parks might actually happen this summer in Calgary. Like yourselves, we long to go for a drink and spend quality time with friends and family on the weekends, but indoor gatherings and dining are currently prohibited. Instead, in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19, we’ve had to take things outside. Luckily for us, the weather is looking up and Calgary city councillors are looking forward.

Over the weekend, in response to a tweet suggesting that YYC open public beer gardens, Ward 9 Councillor, Gian-Carlo Carra shared that he actually has a notice of motion coming forward to pilot consumption in Calgary parks.

Now, as some of you may remember, a project similar to this one was actually proposed and given the okay back in 2019 but never actually launched.

Calgary’s pop-up patio program is back & open for applicants for the season

At the time, the public was divided; worried that some people would take things too far and get crazy, disruptive, and endanger others by driving under the influence.

As of right now, Calgary has a zero-tolerance policy on drinking pretty much anywhere but in social clubs, bars, venues, and at home. This new project would loosen things up a little and hopefully give some folks incentive to spend time outside where it’s safer.

Unfortunately, we won’t know anything further until the councillors review the proposal on May 10th, but we’ll keep you guys updated!

In the meantime, we want to know what you think about allowing consumption in Calgary parks! Would you guys be more inclined to socially distance and hang out outdoors if given the chance to drink in public or do you think this is a terrible idea. Let us know in the comments!
