This historic steam train lets you experience Alberta like it’s the 1920s

The Alberta Prairie Railway is back with another summer full of excursions, giving passengers a chance to step aboard a beautifully restored 1920s train for an experience that feels straight out of another era. So if your idea of a perfect day trip includes rolling prairie views, live entertainment and a bit of unexpected Wild West energy, this one is worth adding to your bucket list.

Departing from the town of Stettler, located about three hours from Calgary, these one-of-a-kind excursions have become a favourite for couples, families and anyone looking for a day trip that’s a little out of the ordinary.

Trust us, this is one ride you won’t want to miss.

Dinner, live entertainment and a train robbery

Forget everything you think you know about trains because this one is packed with surprises the moment you climb aboard.

The Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions operates inside restored vintage passenger coaches from the 1920s, giving the whole experience a nostalgic, old-world feel that sets the tone for the day.

According to the Alberta Prairie Railway, the excursion takes you through Alberta’s prairie landscapes on trips lasting anywhere from three to six hours, depending on which one you choose. Throughout the season, you can choose from a variety of excursions, including family adventures, adult-only trips, murder mystery experiences, and even the beloved Polar Express during the holiday season.

Many of the excursions take you through the historic Village of Big Valley, where you’ll have the chance to explore attractions like the restored railway station and museums before enjoying a full-course buffet meal and live entertainment.

And of course, one of the biggest highlights is the infamous Reynolds Raiders, a group of staged outlaws who dramatically stop the train mid-journey to put on a “train robbery.” After a short mock showdown, the stolen money is recovered and donated to children’s charities. Over the years, the Alberta Prairie Railway has contributed over $100,000 thanks to this tradition.

Planning your next prairie adventure

In terms of cost, fares vary by excursion, ranging from around $70 to $190 depending on the experience. Some options include full meals, while others are shorter sightseeing-style trips, so you can choose based on how much time you want to spend on board.

Getting there is relatively straightforward. Stettler is about three hours from Calgary and two and a half hours from Edmonton. Once you arrive in the town, the station is located on the southeast end, where the nearby burgundy grain elevator will lead you straight to the loading area.

So if you’ve been looking for an excuse to trade highways for railway tracks this summer, this is it. Grab your tickets, settle in your seat and don’t be surprised if your journey includes a little Wild West excitement before you make it back to the station.
