Start your engines! This fall, those looking to hit the open road are encouraged to cruise down the Cowboy Trail, an Alberta beauty that runs 700 kilometres across Canada’s Rocky Mountain Foothills
From wide open prairie to peaks and valleys, there’s no wrong way to explore this iconic stretch of highway, but there are a few spots that shouldn’t be missed.
Whether you’re carefully curating your next staycation, or are feeling spontaneous, Highway 22 is hard to beat.
Along the way, prepare to see wildlife, grasslands, and lush forests in between the many roadside attractions.
Whether you’re hungry, thirsty, or just curious, swing by the Oldman River Brewing Company, the town of Cremona or Bragg Creek, where there are plenty of family-run eateries, bars and cafes.
Love fishing or dream of horseback riding through the mountains? The Cowboy Trail has no shortage of incredible tours and trail rides along the way.
If you’re hoping to learn and grow, check out Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, which is an incredible site protected by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
There is also the Sundre and District Museum, a charming spot frozen in time with historic houses and 8 heritage buildings, and The Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site.
Brought your cowboy hat? Book an excursion with Saddle Peak Trail Rides or Moose Mountain Adventures – both of which offer horseback tours.
It’s going to be a wild ride!
Those who are in it for the long haul can pull into Cochrane or the Town of Pincher Creek, though if you’re looking for something with a Western spirit – you could also stop by Anchor D or the Historic Reesor Ranch. Yeehaw!
But there you have it.
Plan ahead and enjoy! Your journey along the Cowboy Trail awaits.
For all of the incredible businesses featured along the way check out the map above or visit the Cowboy Trail Tourism Association website.
