20 Of The Best Things To Do At Home And Around Calgary This July

How in the heck is it July already folks!? Time flies doesn’t it. Okay, so let’s address the elephant in the room. No there is no Stampede this year, and no, the city’s annual Canada celebrations will look a tad different this year, but man oh, man, is Calgary doing the absolute most to fill the void. This month we’ve got a ton of ‘Stampede-ish’ events, fireworks displays, markets, and ways to celebrate and support the ENTIRE community. It’s going to be a busy one, friends! Here are 20 things to do at home and around Calgary this July.

LIVESTREAM CALGARY’S BIG CANADA DAY CONCERT 

Let’s kick off this month with a BANG. Calgary will stream an incredible concert filmed at Studio Bell featuring local legend Paul Brandt, as well as Lynn Olagundoye, T Buckley, Chad Van Gaalen, and Bebe Buckskin. In addition to this, the city is also encouraging the public to wear red and white, then light up the night by setting up and then turning on their Christmas lights around 10 pm. Happy Canada Day, friends!

WATCH THE ‘FIRE ON THE LAKE’ CANADA DAY FIREWORKS

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 virus, this year’s Canada Day fireworks will be a zero-attendance event. Instead, you’re encouraged to stream it online from home – a date late, because of the weather is kind of crappy on July 1st. The show must go on!

CRAFT BEER MARKET – STAMPEDE-ISH EVENT

This year, at all CRAFT locations, you can really take in the energy of the Calgary Stampede at safe and responsible distance. These guys will have hay bales, wagon wheels, boots, hats, country tunes and cold beer, so basically everything you need for a proper Cowtown party!

GRETA BAR ALL AGES PANCAKE BREAKFAST 

Flapjacks for charity? Consider us in! This July check out Greta Bar for their stampede inspired all-ages brekkie! Each stack of fluffy goodness will only cost you $5 which will go directly the Mustard Seed of Calgary in support of those who need it most.

TAKE A COOKING CLASS WITH CANADA’S BEST

Last call! All June with the Brewery and the Beast’s Homeschool Series, foodies got ultra-creative in the kitchen and behind the bar. Every week the video series featured festival alumni chefs and guest bartenders. On July 2nd, check out the last installment of the series!

GRAB SOME GRUB AT THE STAMPEDE FOOD TRUCK RALLY 

Midway food has become our absolute favourite part of the Stampede, and we know we’re not the only one’s. This year, like every year before it, we can sink our teeth into greasy, sugar-coated, deep-fried goodness via drive-thru!

CELEBRATE 7-ELEVEN DAY 2020 WITH FREE SLURPEES

This July, Sev will be sharing the gift of chill! From July 6th to the 12th, Canadians can get a buy one, get one Slurpee delivered through UberEats or Skip the Dishes AND they’ll be throwing a virtual block party where they’re encouraging fans to create and share #SlurpeeDancePartee videos on their TikTok or Instagram.

A MINI DONUT DRIVE-THRU

Yeeeehaw! This July roll into the Stampede grounds for a pop-up mini-donut drive-thru! Grab and go OR purchase a pail ahead of time for two free gate admissions to the 2021 Sneak-a-Peak!

July 11th will be a big day for Calgary’s science centre! These guys are reopening to the public, and they’re inviting you to come down, get educated, and see what they’ve been up to since they closed in March. They’ve missed you!

CALGARY STAMPEDE BELL FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR 

It’ll be just like old times! On Friday, July 3rd and Sunday, 12th, Calgarians will be able to watch an incredible fireworks display with Bell and the Calgary Stampede’s firework spectacular! Check it out over the city skyline or on CTV where they’ll stream it live!

OUTDOOR DISTANCE-FRIENDLY LINE DANCING CLASSES

Boot scoot and boogie at this safe and fun stampede themed line dancing event put together by dance company Puddle of Mud Productions. Tighten that belt, slip on those cowboy boots and yahoo to the country music stylings of your favourite artists.

BMO KIDS’ DAY PANCAKE DRIVE-THRU

This guy’s really just thought of everything! Stampede week wouldn’t be complete without a FREE pancake breakfast! Register now, and roll up to get a few flapjacks just like last year, and every year before that.

MOTOR NIGHTS DRIVE-IN MOVIE SERIES

From vintage classics to new school cool, Motor Nights: A Series of Drive-In Events will be bringing you everything you want in a night at the movies- nostalgia, excitement, and a sense of community in a year when we could all use it the most.

MARDA LOOP YYC MADE OUTDOOR MARKET 

This artisan market will be the place to be if your a foodie, love shopping local and are looking to get some fresh air! Support the community and grab some grub at the food trucks. Yum! Sounds like a good day to us!

Cry, feel and then cry again… in the comfort of your own home! Shakespeare by the Bow is one of Calgary’s favourite summer park activities, but unfortunately, because of the virus, we won’t be able to hit Princes Island while we watch. Instead, tune in online!

VISIT THE FARMERS MARKET IN HILLHURST

Shop around, get some fresh air, and support local by browsing the vendors at this season’s Hillhurst Sunnyside Farmer’s Market! For those who are ready to go out and resume everyday life, they’ve taken the necessary precautions to keep you all as safe as possible. They’ve even exclusively given the 60+ crowd their own hours!

LET LOOSE AT A HOTELS LIVE CONCERT

This July, in support of local artists and businesses, The Calgary Hotel Association has come up with Hotels Live a genius social distancing event. Using suite patios that overlook either a courtyard or in Calgary’s case a pool area, people will be able to watch a concert feeling like a VIP.

CHECK OUT THE CALGARY ZOO’S BUGTOPIA PARK!

Leave the world of furry four-legged creatures and cross the bridge into Bugtopia, a larger than life playground where kids can learn more about our creepy crawly counterparts. Thanks to a generous donation made by the Brawn Family Foundation, tiny tots and even their parents can fill their noggins while they climb, swing, and slide through the Calgary Zoo’s brand new park.
