We’re relying on good food and cold drinks to get us through the next few spicy months of cancelled travel and festival plans. Summer is in full swing, and although we might not be able to hit the beach, we can hit the YYC patio circuit! Unfortunately, there’s only so much room in our stomach, so we’ll need to be strategic. Our tour-de-snack had us thinking, where would we even start eating ourselves into the fall?! Here’s a list of a few things that we came up with! Without further adieu, we present to you, 11 must-try summer food/drinks that you can get in Calgary.
We’re not playing when we say that you should enjoy one of these bad boys responsibly. Hand your phone to a responsible party member and hit the straw. Tropical’s giant margaritas are made with real fruit, 4 oz of tequila, and 2 oz of triple sec. Technically, these are supposed to be shared among 3 people, but… we may or may have been able to crush one all by ourselves.

At Uzu Taiyaki you’ll have the ultimate ice-cream experience. We promise you won’t find anything like this anywhere else in Calgary. At Uzu, the ice cream is soft and the toppings are aplenty but the selling point here really is their adorable fish-shaped cones. Also, it’s right by the river! So you can take a quaint stroll with your tasty treat.

Attention: vegans and lactose sufferers. No longer do not have to sacrifice your insides to enjoy a chilly summer snack! At V Burger, the ice cream is cream-less and the milkshakes are bowel approved. They have 11 crowd-pleasing flavours like classic chocolate, vanilla and strawberry as well as out of the box cooling combinations like rootbeer swirl, banana split, and pina colada.

Extra meat, extra guac, extra good. Blanco’s make your own nachos are the summer starter of your dreams. Choose from a ton of toppings and pick from 3 different sizes depending on your group size. Grab a cold beer and melt like all that cheese on your plate into the tropical vibe of the restaurant itself.

This might be the summer drink to end all summer drinks. Prosecco and a popsicle? Name a more seasonally iconic duo. Go ahead, we’ll wait. The sweet concoction is so incredibly refreshing and also pretty photogenic. It’s basically a beachy paradise in a glass.

A Trip to Disney is a no-go right now, but at the Inglewood drive-in, you can fool your tastebuds into thinking you’re in California at the park. If you’ve never had Dole whip, you are in for a treat. Hell, an out-of-body experience even. This is by far one of our favourite items on this ‘Calgary must-try summer food/drinks’ list. A scoop of this stuff, and you’ll go from cones and chocolate sauce to, ‘ice cream, who?’

If you’re craving a light tropical snack, Ricardo’s Hideaway has just the thing. Plantain chips are super yummy. Pair with a pina colada and in a blink, you’ll be on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean. You won’t want to leave this place folks. Talk about a staycation!

You can’t have a summer must-eat list without some BBQ! Comery Block is 17th Avenue’s newest country-style kitchen and man do these guys know their way around a grill. Snag yourself a spot on their massive patio, order a cold beer, and dig into some fall off the bone ribs.*Chefs kiss*

No one does bubble tea like Royaltea. These guys have, what feels like a million different flavour combinations and mixins, and a fun little shtick! Grab milk, tea, or dessert-based drink, then top it off with your choice of jelly or mousse! These guys honestly have a little something for everyone and it’s all refreshing!

Simply Irie is an authentic Caribbean resto, with a menu that could knock your socks off. Everything is insanely good, but their Jerk Chicken is beachy BBQ at it’s prime. This summer, take a plate of the good stuff on the patio and enjoy your food in the sun, the way that it was intended.

Alright, so this isn’t a specific dish, but it’s too cute not to include. At Calgary’s famed River Cafe, you can snag a customizable picnic box and enjoy it right there at their picnic garden. Or, you can take it with you and dive into this tasty combination wherever you want!
