Netflix’s newest zombie series shows off Calgary

While Calgary has been blowing up in the film and television industry, we don’t think anyone could have predicted the latest Netflix show to have been shot here. Netflix’s upcoming series Black Summer is a post-apocalyptic, gritty zombie series, with Calgary playing the part of Anywhere, North America.

Sharp fans may recognize settings like Queen Elizabeth School, McMahon Stadium, and even the Stampede Grounds. Smaller towns outside of Calgary, like Beiseker and Irricana, were also chosen.

Wan Lim, a member of Alberta Film Projects, had to show that Calgary truly could double for any Mid Western American city. In the end, Calgary beat out cities in Mexico, Washington, and even Ottawa. Take that, national capital.

Keep an eye out for some local talent on-screen as well. The Netflix series has Calgary-born Kelsey Flower and Drumheller native Kealey Storrs playing in the series. Flower takes the role of main character Lance, hopefully not just for one season.

Black Summer is currently streaming on Netflix Canada, so pop some popcorn and settle into your comfy spot on the couch. Trust us, you won’t be getting up for a couple of hours once you start.
