A look inside the new art gallery at the old Planetarium
Great news, Cowtown! What used to be the old Planetarium beside Shaw Millenium Park has found a new resident in Contemporary Calgary. What’s the goal? T0 become an internationally acclaimed contemporary art gallery, the first of its kind in Calgary. Mark us down as very, very excited.
Also, you can check it out and submit your input before it is completely transformed. With the support of federal, provincial and municipal governments, Contemporary Calgary is looking to overhaul the site.
Did you know that Calgary is the only North American city this size without a ‘Class A’ contemporary art gallery? Well, that’s a bummer. Especially since galleries like this attract tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of visitors each year.
So, it makes sense that the project has already received $25M of the $117M price tag, even though it’s only the early stages of development. As for the remaining amount, they hope to receive roughly $30M each from federal, provincial and private sectors. Obviously, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that this happens.
After all, more gallery days and art exhibits just adds to Calgary’s allure.
Currently, the old Planetarium has been transformed into a collaborative artist space. Visitors can check out 30 different artists as they work in the space. Also, on September 19, a Cocktails on Canvas event kicks off to encourage community involvement. Art and booze, a fundraiser doesn’t get more simple than that!
Naturally, we will keep you posted about the new gallery as information is released. Cheers, Calgary!
