What’s this? Snow in the forecast in Edmonton once more? Honestly, we were starting to forget that it even existed! Well, paired with some pretty mild weather, we can’t help but get a little excited about it. Enjoy a winter wonderland once more, or feel that much better escaping it with some indoor options.

Here are 10 of the best things to do in Edmonton this week.

SILVER SKATE FESTIVAL

We’re huge fans of this annual festival that combines a little bit of everything. Check out snow sculptures, learn something new at the heritage village… the list goes on! Plus, the location in Hawrelak Park makes it the perfect option for a nice outdoor excursion.

When: On throughout the week
Where: Hawrelak Park
Cost: Varies

GO SKATING

The ice rinks are calling, and we must go! From small and lesser-known spots to some of the most popular skating areas around, Edmonton is full of incredible options, and we’re going to make the most of them every chance we get!

When: Open throughout February
Where: All around Edmonton

OR SLEDDING

If Edmonton manages to get any significant amount of snow this week, then we’re making a bee-line to the local hill. Care to join in? Don’t worry, because we’ve rounded up some of the best sledding hills in the city for your convenience!

SWEET TREATS & LATTE FESTIVAL

This food and drink festival in Old Strathcona is a great way to enjoy Edmonton’s culinary scene. We’re the first to admit that we’ve used lattes, hot chocolate and baked goods to eat (and drink) our emotions more than a few times this winter.

When: On throughout the week
Where: Around Old Strathcona

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF WINTER CINEMA

This is technically part of Silver Skate, but we feel like it deserves a special mention. Showing a wide variety of films with a very simple connecting concept (the winter) this is the only festival in the world that is both free and shows movies on an snow screen!

When: Showtimes throughout the week
Where: Hawrelak Park
Cost: Free to attend

CHECK OUT METRO CINEMA

After an extended hiatus, Metro Cinema reopens its doors once more this week! If you’re looking for something indoors to do this week, then this is our top pick.

When: Opens Friday, February 18th
Where: 8712 109 Street
Cost: Varies

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT! CELEBRATING THE HOLLYWOOD FILM MUSICAL

On a similar note, live music is back at the Winspear Centre. First up is a salute to some of the most notable movie soundtracks ever made, ranging from West Side Story to Chicago.

When: Friday, February 18th
Where: 4 Sir Winston Churchill Square Northwest
Cost: $22+

EDMONTON OILERS

The Oilers shook things up in the coaching department, and we can’t wait to see how it pans out. They’ve got a couple of road games up next, but will be playing at home against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday! We wanna see it go down in person.

When: Thursday, February 17th
Where: 10220 104 Avenue NW
Cost: Varies

CANADIAN BIRKIE SKI FESTIVAL

The Birkebeiner Ski Festival is for cross country skiers, sure, but it has a very fun twist, as the most devoted of the events is a 55km long marathon with a 5.5kg weight strapped to your back (to symbolize a child, of course!)

When: On throughout the week
Where: Locations vary
Cost: Varies

TELUS WORLD OF SCIENCE

There’s always something fun going on at the Telus World of Science, but we’ve got two things in mind here. First, their IMAX theatre is a great way to experience a classic movie, a new blockbuster, or a stunning documentary. Second, the Zeidler Dome has laser shows that are, frankly, out of this world.

When: Open Wednesday to Sunday
Where: 11211 142 Street NW
Cost: $31.45 for GA

Those are our picks for this week, Edmonton!
