More good winter weather? Hoo boy! With the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day both coming up in the next few days, we need to have some options ready in Edmonton. But, that’s just the tip of the local iceberg, with festivals, live sports, and more all going down.

Here are 10 of the best things to do in Edmonton this weekend.

SILVER SKATE FESTIVAL

We’re huge fans of this annual festival that combines a little bit of everything. Check out snow sculptures, learn something new at the heritage village… the list goes on! Plus, the location in Hawrelak Park makes it the perfect option for a nice outdoor excursion.

When: Starts Friday, February 11th
Where: Hawrelak Park
Cost: Varies

LA BOHEME

Shake up the usual activities with this opera! Telling the story of 19th-century artists living in Paris, La Boheme is classic Italian opera, sure, but we’re immensely grateful that there will be English subtitles projected alongside the live performance.

When: Friday, February 11th
Where: 11455 87 Avenue
Cost: $29+

WATCH SOME SHORTS FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

In honour of Black History Month, Metro Cinema has curated a selection of Canadian short films and documentaries, and they’re free to watch! It’s a great alternative to just binge-watching a bunch of Netflix, so check it out.

When: Streaming throughout the weekend
Where: Online
Cost: Free!

EDMONTON OILERS

The last of the Oilers three-game home stretch this week is this Friday! The team will be going up against the New York Islanders, who are touring around the country, having defeated the Canucks yesterday.

When: Friday, February 11th
Where: 10220 104 Avenue NW
Cost: Varies

CANADIAN BIRKIE SKI FESTIVAL

The Birkebeiner Ski Festival is for cross country skiers, sure, but it has a very fun twist, as the most devoted of the events is a 55km long marathon with a 5.5kg weight strapped to your back (to symbolize a child, of course!)

When: Starts Friday, February 11th
Where: Locations vary
Cost: Varies

ELK ISLAND NATIONAL PARK

Elk Island is a veritable winter wonderland year after year, and luckily, you can check it out no matter the weather. Whether you’re hitting the trails, stargazing, or trying to see some buffalo in true winter fashion, this national park is always worth the drive out there.

When: Open throughout the week
Where: 54401 Range Road 203, Fort Saskatchewan
Cost: $7.90 for admissions

U OF A BOTANIC GARDEN

The U of A Botanic Garden has a few wonderful experiences to enjoy this weekend! You can enjoy a 3-course dinner in one of their domes, or opt-in for some family fun that includes snowshoeing, live music, and even a cabane a sucre!

When: Throughout the weekend
Where: 51227 AB-60, Parkland County, AB
Cost: Prices vary

LA POUTINE WEEK

Poutine is delicious any time of year, but is definitely best enjoyed during the colder months. So, now’s a great time to enjoy the return of La Poutine Week, which has over 20 local restaurants joining in, with the hopes of being crowned the best in the city!

When: On throughout the weekend
Where: Locations around Edmonton

WATCH THE OLYMPICS

That’s right folks, the 2022 Winter Olympics kick off this weekend! It’s not exactly an easy event to sum up, but the world’s greatest winter athletes will be competing head-to-head in hundreds of events. Need a place to start? Click the link above to see all the Alberta-born athletes that will be there.

When: On throughout the weekend

TELUS WORLD OF SCIENCE

There’s always something fun going on at the Telus World of Science, but we’ve got two things in mind here. First, their IMAX theatre is a great way to experience a classic movie, a new blockbuster, or a stunning documentary. Second, the Zeidler Dome has laser shows that are, frankly, out of this world.

When: Open Wednesday to Sunday
Where: 11211 142 Street NW
Cost: $31.45 for GA

That’s what we’ve got in mind this weekend, Edmonton!
