Campechano

This little nook along Adelaide Street is one of Toronto’s best destinations for tacos. According to the Michelin Guide, its menu is fairly short but great considering its loaded with top sellers. The smoky barbacoa with jalapeño salsa or the flaky, beer-battered haddock with red cabbage? Decisions, decisions.

Where: 504 Adelaide St.

Fonda Balam

If you’re looking for the best lengua taco, or birria in Toronto, the Michelin Guide recommends Fonda Balam. “This is food you crave on a regular basis served in an easy-going setting that doesn’t care how you’re dressed.”

Where: 802 Dundas St. W

Quetzal

This elegant destination stands out on College Street, offering upscale Mexican cuisine and delicious craft cocktails in a sleek dining environment.

“Lamb barbacoa packed into griddled, blue masa tortillas and charred maitake mushrooms set in a crema poblana highlight the transformative magic of fire, while dry-aged amberjack aguachile flexes the kitchen’s delicate side,” shares the Michelin Guide.

Where: 419 College St.

Puerto Bravo

Out in Toronto’s east end is this tight spot with a mighty menu. Puerto Bravo’s menu features a small list of dishes but each stands out on its own – quality over quantity. Michelin Guide recommends trying the Wera tostada – a crispy corn tostada, layered with mashed avocado, thin slices of octopus, and shrimp tossed in a spicy macha mayo.

Where: 1425 Gerrard St.

La Bartola

You’ll be surprised to find that their dishes are meat-free, which definitely stands out among the list of traditional and authentic Mexican restaurants in the city. “Black sesame tostadas with salsa macha negra and sikil pak are a perfect opener,” shares the Michelin Guide. “Tacos made from purple corn are eye-catching, while braised hibiscus is a delicious substitute for the typical meat.”

Where: 588 College St.
