Spring has sprung but here in the Prairies, we’ve come to expect the unexpected! Despite soaring June temperatures, parts of Alberta could see some snow this week – but it’s not all bad news.
According to Stephen Burg, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, some residents will see flakes and fluff by Wednesday, but major cities and towns will be spared.

“It looks like there probably will be snow, but at high elevations,” he told Curiocity, adding that those in spots only above 1,500 metres should prepare for incoming powder – this includes Lake Louise and various highways.
“It doesn’t look like it’ll be hitting Calgary, Airdrie, Sundre – those areas. It looks like it’ll be more toward the Rockies.”
What most of us will see, however, is rain.
“There is currently a severe thunderstorm watch for a decent chunk of Alberta [Edmonton, Leduc, Elk Island etc.] that could include a possibility of hail.”
“For other communities, it does look like there is widespread rain coming through,” he continued, adding that this will roll over into the next few days but that this could help with the current wildfires and smoke in the more central parts of the province.
“Some parts from the southern Foothills area, Waterton Lakes and Kananaskis region, all the way up to Fort Chipewyan might get as much as 20 to 30 or more millimetres.”
So there you have it, Alberta. It’s going to be a wild week! Be safe, stay dry and be patient. It won’t be long until it’s sun, fun and blue sky once again.
