We’re staying cool in a cave this summer! Especially when that cave is, in and of itself, actually cool. We came across an Airbnb in the south of Spain that lets you literally live as a ‘troglodyte’. We always thought that was just a funny insult, but turns out it’s got some real world roots.

Yeah, troglodyte quite literally translates to ‘cave dweller’, which is exactly what a stay in this spot lets you become. Heck, for the time you’re there, you might even be the most sophisticated troglodyte on the entire planet, which is a fun little claim to make after your vacation is over.

Enough nerding out over the word, though. Located outside the city of Cordova, this Airbnb is part of a larger stone quarry that belonged to either the Roman Empire or the Umayyad caliphate (part of the Arab Empire). Either way, we’re talking about at least 1000, and maybe 2000, years of history here. That tracks, since Cordova itself has been around since like 150 BC.

We give you this backstory because honestly, the Airbnb itself doesn’t look the part. Part of a larger farm complex, the property offers a clean, white, modern aesthetic amidst the remnants of the cave system. Fully equipped with a bedroom, a bathroom, and a full kitchen, the home quite literally jumps forward 1000 years.

That extends to the aesthetic, too. Focusing on an open floor plan and (surprisingly enough) natural light, the home offers a stark contrast between the exposed rock cave and the clean, modern lines of the design. Bonus time- the cave also acts as a natural A/C, with the temperature hovering around 18-20°C throughout the year.

And if that wasn’t enough to stay cool, we suggest you stroll around the property’s garden before kicking back at the pool! If you’re looking for an Airbnb for your next getaway to the south of Spain, make sure to keep this unique option in mind.
