If you hate four page menus, and love steak, this new Toronto restaurant is just for you. J’s Steak Frites has recently opened its doors at 1198 Queen Street West (formerly Dandylion), and it offers its guests just one item and one item only: steak frites.

According to co-owners Jad Sfeir and Tara Tang, they felt there was a gap in the market when it came to offering Torontonians high-quality and affordable steak, and “after two years of making some pretty difficult decisions, they thought it’d be nice to give people a decision-free night out.”

While the space only serves one item, the meal comes with house-made bread and butter, along with a green salad.

“This is simplicity at its best,” said Sfeir. “Steak frites restaurants, with limited menus, are very popular in Paris. We’re not reinventing the wheel with this concept — we’re bringing it to the city we love and we’re presenting it in a fresh way.”

At this time, the 30-seat restaurant will not be taking reservations, but it says that it plans to offer dinner from 5 pm to late, Wednesday-Saturday, and from noon to 8 pm on Sundays.

For those who used to visit Dandylion, expect many of the same design elements, including the exposed brick and dramatic windows overlooking Queen West.

The cost of dinner at J’s Steak Frites is $49 per person, but that doesn’t include drinks or dessert.

And while the steak is the main attraction here, they have dessert that is not to be missed, as it is led by chef and co-owner Tara Tang. She is a Le Cordon Bleu trained pastry chef with a passion for baked goods! Dessert here will be made up of a daily rotation of several cakes, so be sure to ask what’s available!
