8 film festivals to check out in Ontario after TIFF

The show must go on! Of course, everyone is buzzing right now about TIFF. The film festival is one of the biggest events in Toronto but the fun doesn’t have to stop there. There are plenty of other film festivals to enjoy in Ontario and these are the ones you need to check out.
Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival
This festival begins one day before TIFF ends!
This one is a biggie and is considered a premier film event in Canada.
The festival screens over 100 films, documentaries and short films over the course of nine days.
When: September 14th – 22nd, 2024

Ottawa International Animation Festival
From TIFF, right to something new!
The Ottawa International Animation Festival brings animations to life and brings together those who have a passion for animating.
Some of the venues include ByTowne Cinema, Arts Court, Club SAW, Strathcona Park, the National Arts Centre, Château Laurier and the Ottawa Art Gallery.
When: September 25th – 29th, 2024

Forest City Film Festival
For those in southern Ontario, this is for you.
The fest brings a showcase of creators connected to Southwestern Ontario in the form of documentaries, animations, short films and more.
When: October 19th – 27th, 2024

Reelworld Film Festival
This is another Toronto film festival you’ll want to put on your radar.
The films featured in this fest showcase Black, Indigenous, Asian, South Asian and People of Colour filmmakers and actors.
You won’t have to wait long after TIFF either – Reel World runs from October 21st – 27th. You can watch all the films at Paradise Theatre.

Barrie Film Festival (BFF)
With a name like BFF, it’s too cute to not attend.
The Barrie Film Festival runs this fall, with ten days of screenings happening at Galaxy Cinema downtown.
There will even be family-friendly films so be sure to bring the whole crew.

Windsor International Film Festival
It’s WIFF, not TIFF.
Windsor has its own international film festival, and according to Destination Ontario, those who attend can expect “excellent programming that recognizes female filmmakers and strong Francophone and 2SLGBTQI+ representation in cinema.”
When: October 24th – November 3rd, 2024
Where: Paradise Theatre, 1006 Bloor Street West, Toronto, ON
Reel Asian International Film Festival
This is Canada’s largest pan-Asian film festival!
Not only will this international film festival showcase Asian actors and filmmakers, but will also include talks and workshops for the public to be a part of.
The films will be shown in various theatres around the city of Toronto.
When: November 13th – 24th, 2024

IncluCity Festival
This festival is the largest Italian film fest outside of Italy – pretty cool!
You’ll have to wait a bit for this one as it’s happening summer of 2025 but you won’t want to miss it when it comes around.
The festival happens right in the Distillery District, boasting outdoor screenings of Italian and multicultural cinema.
