It’s hard to believe the official end of summer is coming up next month. If you still have a summer bucket list to get through, make sure you have a day at one of our local swimming holes on the list! Generally, they’re not quite as packed as public pools in the neighbourhoods, and it’s a chance to get outside and be in nature while it’s warm out. With that in mind, here are a few of the best swimming holes you can visit in Washington State before the end of summer.

Battle Ground Lake State Park

If you’re looking for a lake experience, Battle Ground Lake State Park might just be for you. The spring-fed lake is perfect for swimming in the summer and you can also enjoy the luxury of being able to camp on the grounds.

Where:  18002 NE 249th Street, Battle Ground, Washington

Quarry Pool

The Quarry Swimming Pool is unlike any other! This spot was originally a working sandstone quarry in the late 1800’s and is now a low-cost, family-friendly recreation spot for all to enjoy. This year, it is open until September 1st, 2024, so be sure to visit sooner than later.

Where: 399 W Park Ave, Tenino, Washington

Whatcom Falls Park

Whatcom Falls Park is a beautiful place to spend a day for both the winding forested trails and of course the falls themselves. You’ll also find a beautifully built WPA bridge. Of course, the main attraction here in the summer is the swimming holes located along the river.

“A picturesque plunge tucked away in the woods, Whirlpool Falls drops into a popular summertime swimming hole. Though it’s not labeled on the official park map, you can find this small waterfall just north of the Waterline Bridge,” states Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism.

Where: 1401 Electric Avenue, Bellingham, Washington

Franklin Falls

If you want to be impressed while enjoying your dip then consider heading to Franklin Falls. There’s no need to go far for waterfalls around Seattle. This impressive waterfall is located just an hour outside of the city. And while it’s a very popular spot it’s absolutely worth visiting before summer ends.

Note, as per the Forest Service, “The descent to the base of the 70-foot falls is steep and slippery but plenty of visitors make it down to eat lunch or cool in the mist of the plunge pool.” Just be mindful on your walk!

Where: Denny Creek Trail, North Bend, Washington

Cranberry Lake

If you are looking for freshwater swimming, Cranberry Lake is where you want to go. According to the Deception Pass Park Foundation, “Cranberry Lake hosts a sandy beach with an enclosed swimming area on the west side of the lake and water temperatures are typically between 55 and 60 degrees.”

Where: 41229 State Route 20, Oak Harbor, Washington

Lake Cushman

Here’s one to try to get to as well! The stunning Lake Cushman Reservoir is known as a popular destination for its clear waters and lush forested shoreline. You can boat, picnic, swim, and fish here, so it gets busy on sunny weekends. Be sure to book ahead for your day-use pass here.

Where: 7211 N Lake Cushman Rd, Hoodsport, Washington

Get out there and enjoy the sunshine at these swimming holes in Washington. And be sure to read any park signs & stay safe!
