For those who don’t know, Diwali (or Dipawali) is a festival of lights originating in India, and takes place on Monday, October 24th this year. However, the holiday is celebrated across the world during the days leading up to the 24th as well.

So if you’re in Vancouver and wondering how you can celebrate, here are 5 celebrations and events going on around the city either this weekend or next to check out!

Diwali at VPL

The Vancouver Public Library is hosting a family-friendly evening with music and dance performances, delicious chai, and Diya (clay lamp) painting. Check it out from 5:30 to 7:30 pm – admission is by donation!

And if you’d rather celebrate from home, consider tuning in for their virtual Diwali storytelling event.

Diwali Downtown Vancouver 

Head to the Roundhouse Community Centre on Sunday, October 23rd for their flagship Diwali event, complete with live music and dance performances by Canadian South Asian artists. Guests can also create large community Rangolis, paint their own Diya, and receive Henna designs. Check out their food truck eats and peruse the Diwali market.

Diwali Fusion Bollywood Boat Party

There are still tickets left for Vancouver’s premier Diwali boat party event on Friday, October 21st. With music by DJ Shalv, the boat party will feature three hours of action on the water, spectacular views of the city, and a rooftop dance floor. There will also be food for sale and a professional photographer onboard!

Mega Diwali Show

Due to popular demand, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank is back with the Gujarati Association of BC to bring an inclusive Diwali celebration to ring in the Hindu New Year. Guests will enjoy a unique lights show, traditional Diwali activities, and a festive cultural entertainment program. Oh, and a feast of traditional Indian eats!

CUPW Halloween & Diwali Celebration

Last but not least, we have a Diwali x Halloween celebration to share for double the fun! All CUPW members and non-members are invited to the Fraserview Banquet Hall on Friday, October 28th for a buffet-style meal, door prize entry, and an exciting silent auction to raise funds for the Family Services Of Greater Vancouver.
