What’s happening, fellow foodies? If we’re being honest, there’s nothing that we love more than checking out a brand new place to grab a bite – except for maybe one thing. Getting to share them with you! From tacos to artsy sips, desserts and street eats, Calgary’s been spoiled over the last few months – so for those of you who may have missed it, here are 12 new restaurants, bars and cafes in Calgary that you have to check out.

SAUCY BURGER 

Created by Chef Michael Dekker, Saucy Burger is one of the juiciest new joints in town. As Rouge’s executive chef for years and as a current culinary instructor at SAIT, Dekker has had a ton of experience working a grill, so why not head over there yourself and sink our teeth into his impressive menu? Whether you order their loaded waffle fries or a patty dripping with their house-made cheddar dressing, Saucy burger makes everything with locally sourced, fresh ingredients and it shows.

THE DARK ARTS 

Calgary’s temporary pop-up bar and gallery, Dark Arts, is actually located in the historic GRAND Theatre; an iconic building built over 100 years ago. Showcasing local talent and incredible cocktails, Dark Arts is also where guests are free to roam, drink and appreciate impressive pieces created by select artists, all of which are incredibly talented. It really is something else!

Serving what they call ‘bold and flavourful’ street food, this colourful new eatery is actually inspired by the food that owner Marcela grew up with. From burritos and tostadas and of course, tacos, family recipes passed down through generations will be shared and more than likely enjoyed by any and all guests that pop by for a bite. Check it out!

KATSU17 

From katsu burgers, Ice Cream from Foothills Creamery, cutlets covered in sauce, and Korean Hot Dogs to fried chicken, 17th Avenues’s brand new Katsu17 is bound to become a favourite amongst those wandering in and around the area. Why not pop by before the word really gets out?

MILK

Now located in the NW community of North Mount Pleasant, Milk is a small batch company that makes handcrafted, comforting flavours of nostalgic-flavoured ice cream. Though they’ve been in the game for some time, this is actually their first brick-and-mortar location!

PABLO CHEESE TART

With a wide selection of delicious cheese-cake-like desserts, this wild cheese tart bakery began opening Canadian locations in cities like Toronto and Hamilton a few years ago and it’s been a total success and Calgary is falling in line. Pop a Lactaid and head in for a mind-blowing snack!

Get ready to party it up, Calgary! The folks behind popular pub Ceili’s (which has locations on 17th Ave and 4th Ave downtown) have finally opened their huge new venue, The Rooftop, and wowza, is it something. The project, which has been over a year in the making, is quite literally the size of a typical Stampede tent but will operate year-round – meaning that you should go now… and several times during and after the snow falls.

CINNAHOLIC 

Featured on ABC’s Shark Tank, Cinnaholic is a gourmet cinnamon bun shop that has some pretty extravagant menu items. Covered in everything from fruit to cookies, sauces, and nuts – these guys have completely set themselves apart from other bakeries, cafes, and shops. You won’t be disappointed!

TOTO PIZZA

Located right across the street from Luke’s Drug Mart, Toto is tucked away behind their sister restaurant Villa Firenze, another rustic Italian resto with incredible food and a cozy atmosphere. Serving both experimental and more classic pies, this adorable little spot has found the perfect balance of creativity and authenticity, marrying the old-fashioned ways of doing things with fun and unique toppings like grilled zucchini, apple, and oysters. Yum!

ROCKET FUEL CAFE

The Rocket Fuel Café is going to be unlike anything else in the city and we mean that. Here, science lovers will be able to explore the entire solar system with their taste buds aboard a selection of planet-inspired ‘Astronaut’ Ice Cream cones.  You might say, that the flavours will be out of this world.

FIRST STREET MARKET 

Located smack dab in the middle of downtown, First Street Market is a collection of 9 restaurants and a bar perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, and even coffee for those who are in a rush. With an open concept, a huge patio fitted with TVs, heaters, and a park view, guests can really kick it back in Calgary’s only upscale food court, then leave with a smile on their face… you know, in addition to a stomach full of food.
