Well folks, there’s no doubt about it- the rainy season is truly upon us. And whether you want to laugh in its face or seek solace indoors, we’ve got a few great options for you. After all, we’re no strangers to rain in this city, so let’s check out what’s available!

Here are the best things to do in Vancouver this weekend.

Watch a football game

While we wait for the Canucks home opener, the sports fans among us can check out some other hometown teams! First up is the BC Lions, who face off against the Calgary Stampeders this weekend. The league is super tight this year, and the Lions are just a couple of wins away from clinching a playoff spot. Help them get it!

When: Saturday, October 16th
Where: 777 Pacific Boulevard
Cost: $21.75+

Then watch another football game

In the same vein, the Whitecaps are also fighting for a trip to the playoffs! They’re won or tied the past five games straight, but are facing off against the formidable Sporting Kansas City team this weekend. Know what could help out? Some screaming fans in the seats!

When: Sunday, October 17th
Where: 777 Pacific Boulevard
Cost: $45+

Listen to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra

Craving something a little more refined this weekend? We’ve got that covered, too. Well, the VSO has it covered, since they’re hosting back-to-back concerts focusing on the Indigenous cellist/composer Cris Derksen. We’d spend money just to hang out in the Orpheum, but hearing amazing music? That’s an easy yes.

When: Friday, October 15th and Saturday, October 16th
Where: 601 Smithe Street
Cost: $29.52+

Go for a hike

If you recently bought some waterproof gear and can’t wait to test it out, we’ve got just the idea. After all, what’s a little mud on some Gore-Tex boots during a fall hike? And as a bonus, you’re all but guaranteed to enjoy the trails by yourself while you’re out there.

Or curl up with a book

Rainy days and reading go hand in hand, there’s no denying that. Whether you’re after a used copy of a classic, or something not even English majors have heard of, Vancouver is filled to the brim with amazing bookstores for all kinds of tastes.

Check out the Nitobe Memorial Garden

This little-known garden at UBC is the definition of an urban oasis. A classic Japanese garden, Nitobe is actually best experienced in the fall, as the trees turn to vibrant shades of orange and yellow for your stroll.

When: Open throughout October
Where: 1895 Lower Mall, UBC
Cost: $5

Enjoy Taste of Yaletown

First the first time, Taste of Yaletown has decided to go on for an entire month! This celebration of all things food and drink is a great way to try a new spot in the neighbourhood. And while we’re sure each one is worth a visit, we can’t help but circle back to Provence Marinaside.

When: Throughout the week

Laugh it up at an Improv Festival

Not feeling the anxiety of a life or death game show? Well, you’ll be happy to know that the Vancouver Improv Fest returns this week. Starting Friday, you’ll be treated to panels, workshops, and of course, more than a few very funny improv shows.

When: Shows throughout the weekend

Go grab a pumpkin

We’re happy that the only true farm experience in Vancouver also happens to be well worth the visit! This urban oasis of a farm offers a u-pick pumpkin patch, plus the opportunity to hang out with a bunch of farm animals. It’s also a working farm, so you can pitch in on a couple of tasks if you really want to immerse yourself.

When: Open throughout the weekend
Where: 6767 Balaclava Street
Cost: $8 per adult (comes with a free pumpkin!)

Visit Yoko Ono: Growing Freedom

The Vancouver Art Gallery has got a new exhibition for you to visit! Are we super pumped on Yoko Ono as an artist/activist? We’ll be honest and say no. Has she shone a light on contemporary art and activism in a way that few others have? Yes.

When: Open throughout the weekend
Where: 750 Hornby Street
Cost: Varies

That’s what we’ve got in mind for this weekend, Vancouver! Have fun out there for us.
