There’s a town in Ontario that is home to year-round trails that transform in the winter

One of Ontario’s oldest communities is not only rich in history but in nature experiences as well. It looks like a trip to Penetanguishene, Ontario this winter is a must. Dress for the weather and hit the trails

About a two-hour drive from Toronto is Penetanguishene, a sister city to Midland, Ontario. According to Destination Ontario, the two “are only the beginning of a much bigger, brighter, and adventurous region.”

It’s situated along Georgian Bay and near the 30,000 Islands. Within the town, you can venture through its forests and along old hiking trails.

If the snow is just right, you can even take up snowshoeing. The best place to do this is at Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre. Though it is about a 20-minute drive outside the town, it is worth the little adventure.

Outdoor adventures

This nature preserve sits on 3,000 acres of provincially significant wetlands and woodlands in the heart of Georgian Bay.

It is open nearly every single day of the year, with activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy in every season – especially winter.

According to the wildlife centre, in addition to its year-round hiking trails, there’s another that is exclusively available in the winter months.

The Graham McDonald Snowshoe Trail is perfect for snowshoers!

If you don’t have snowshoes, no worries! They can be rented at the centre starting at $5 plus tax.

Be sure to wear water-resistant, comfortable, flat-sole boots.

But while you’re in Penetanguishene, after you’re done with your outdoor adventures, take time to explore its historic buildings.

Check out the King’s Wharf Theatre, or pay a visit to its Discovery Harbour where you can view reconstructed buildings from historic Penetanguishene and two replica sailing ships from the War of 1812 period.

There’s lots to do and see in the region in any season!
