Attention, film enthusiasts! The Writers Guild Awards are out for 2024, and there are a handful of productions with ties to Canada that ended up taking home ‘the gold,’ so to speak.
Hosted by The Writers Guild of America, the prestigious awards honour excellence in film, television, and radio writing in both original and adapted screenplays, including documentaries and animation.
Among popular shows like Succession (winner of Best Drama Series) and Netflix’s Beef (winner of Best Limited Series) are The Bear (winner of Best Comedy Series) and The Last of Us (winner of Best New Series), both which are connected to Canada in their own respective ways.
Directed by Christopher Storer and written by Karen Joseph Adcock, Joanna Calo, and Kelly Galuska (among others), The Bear stars Jeremy Allen White, who portrays a young chef returning from the fine dining world to his family’s sandwich shop. Set in Chicago, the story follows the changing dynamics of the kitchen as each member of the culinary team evolves.
Canadian chef and actor Matty Matheson plays a recurring character in the comedy-drama series.
The latter show likely needs no introduction, but The Last of Us happens to be the largest series ever filmed in Canada. The show also won 8 Emmys earlier this year – so it’s safe to say that
