Curious how Vancouver ranks in terms of livability when compared with cities across the globe? That’s exactly what the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) looks at every year, and its list of the world’s most liveable cities is officially out for 2024. Perhaps a bit surprisingly, Vancouver ranks in the top 10!

The EIU’s Global Liveability Index looks at 173 cities worldwide, ranking each one on its infrastructure, education, culture and environment, stability, and healthcare. With 30 indicators in each category, the index aims to reveal how comfortable each city is to live in.

On average, the cities in this year’s ranking have scored higher in terms of livability, despite ongoing conflicts, civil unrest, and housing crises, according to the EIU.

Nonetheless, Western Europe as a region came out on top again this year, dominating four categories. In fact, the #1 most liveable city is once again Vienna, Austria!

While Vancouver sits not too far behind in the #7 spot with perfect healthcare and education scores, its infrastructure score is a bit lower due to the city’s “acute housing crisis.”
