You can see the world’s largest golf tee standing 40 feet tall in this Alberta town

Standing tall in the town of Trochu, Alta., is a 40-foot-tall golf tee that has quite an interesting backstory. The giant landmark has been part of the community since 2009, after the town won an Alberta-wide contest to bring the larger-than-life attraction to Trochu.

Today, the tee sits at the Trochu Golf and Country Club and is visible along the highway as you pass through town.

How did the town get the world’s largest golf tee?

According to the Town of Trochu, the giant tee came to town after Trochu entered ATB Financial’s 2009 Teenormous Contest. The province-wide contest gave Alberta communities a chance to compete for a giant golf tee statue. Trochu was selected as one of three finalists, alongside Marwayne and Camrose, before the public voted for their favourite community.

Trochu received more than two-thirds of the votes and won the 40-foot-tall golf tee. And ATB Financial officially presented it to the community on Sept. 30, 2009.

Where can I see the world’s largest golf tee?

The tee is located at the Trochu Golf and Country Club and can be spotted from the nearby highway. The area around the landmark has also been landscaped and lit, with a waterfall and other features nearby.

The golf course is open to the public from April through October.

What else can I do in Trochu?

The golf tee isn’t the only reason to stop in Trochu; the town also has several attractions you can add to your visit if you’re passing through.

Take a walk through the Trochu Arboretum and Gardens
- If you need a place to stretch your legs, the Trochu Arboretum and Gardens is a great spot. The space features walking paths that wind through more than 3,000 trees, shrubs, and flowers. It’s especially nice in the warmer months when everything is in bloom.

Visit the Trochu and District Museum
- The Trochu and District Museum is packed with pieces from the town’s past, from early French settlement in the area to the history of local grain elevators. You can also see historic printing equipment, old photographs and more.

- If you muster up an appetite while you’re in town, the Red Bird Diner has burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads and other diner classics on the menu. There’s also a daily special, so it’s worth checking what’s available when you stop in.

Play a round at the Trochu Golf and Country Club
- If you’re heading over to visit the tee, there’s no better time to enjoy a round at the town’s public nine-hole course. The course winds through natural coulees and is also home to a gorgeous creek.

Explore the Centennial Trails
- The Centennial Trail stretches for more than 2.7 kilometres through Trochu and includes walking paths, bridges, benches, and historical markers along the route. The trail connects several areas of town and is open year-round.
