There’s still time to take advantage of the summer weather and get out on the water, so why not pay a visit to the largest reservoir in British Columbia?
Situated in northeast BC near the small towns of Hudson’s Hope and Mackenzie, the Willston Reservoir is the seventh largest in the world by volume, and it’s a popular destination for boaters and fishers year-round.
Here, the Peace River flows out of the eastern edge of the lake through the Peace River Canyon, which includes several BC Hydro-operated dams that reuse water that’s already generated electricity.
Those looking to check out the surrounding area can visit the third-oldest European community in BC, which dates all the way back to the late 1700s, when fur traders arrived in the area.
Flash forward to today, and the small town is surrounded by lakes and meandering rivers for visitors to check out. This includes Williston Reservoir, Dinosaur Lake, and the Peace River.
The reservoir has multiple boat launch ramps available for public use, and has plenty of fish for anglers to catch, including bull and rainbow trout, rocky mountain and lake whitefish.
The lake remains a popular destination even in the winter months, when the surface freezes over.
So there you have it, BC! Happy summer and fall adventuring.
