Another holiday is nearly here and it’s high time to plan the weekend ahead! This Canada Day, government employees and shops all over the city will be closing early or just taking the entire day off, so take note, because nothing kills a vibe quicker than a locked door.

Here is everything open and closed on Canada Day in Calgary.

OPEN

MOVIE THEATRES

Hoping to catch a flick this weekend? Landmark Cinemas, Cineplex and Calgary’s cheap theatre, Canyon Meadows, will all be open this weekend.

MALLS

Though we’d recommend checking their hours before heading out, Southcentre Mall, CrossIron Mills, CF Chinook Centre, CF Market Mall and The CORE Shopping Centre will all be open on July 1st.

Looking to get out and about? This year, The Calgary Zoo will not only remain open but will be celebrating Canada Day this year with special programming. Check them out!

Having a BBQ? Need milk or need to do a last-minute beer run before you head to your campsite? You’re in luck. Though (again) we’d recommend checking your store’s hours, most liquor and grocery shops will be open on July 1st.

Views, views and more views. This Canada Day, check out the Calgary Tower, grab a bite to eat at Sky 360 and enjoy!

This weekend, adrenaline-seekers and families looking to enjoy the sunshine can do so at Calaway Park between 10 am to 7 pm. Hold on tight and enjoy!

This Canada Day Calgarians will be able to visit several in-city museums like the Contemporary Calgary, The Hangar Flight Museum, and the Military Museum. Happy learning!

Want to stay indoors? This Canada Day you can get into the National Music Centre for FREE!

Go back in time this Canada Day at Heritage Park! This year, Calgarians can check out old-timey buildings, shops, carnival rides and special programming!

CITY-OWNED RECREATIONAL FACILITIES AND LEISURE CENTRES

Sorry, folks – but this Canada Day, the following facilities will be closed in lieu of the holiday. Don’t worry though, it won’t be long until they reopen.

POST OFFICES

Whether it’s an Amazon return or an invitation – it’ll have to wait! This Canada Day the post office will be closed.

COSTCO

While grocery and convenience stores will be open this weekend Costco will be unshoppable. Looks like you’ll have to get your massive hot do fix before Canada Day! 

GOVERNMENT OFFICES

From the passport office to the DMV, all government offices will be closed on Canada Day.

ROADS

Due to the setup of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the Stampede grounds will be unavailable to the public this year. In addition, vehicle access into West Ramsay (Scotsman’s Hill) Crescent Hill and the following roads in East Village will be closed.

  • 8th Avenue S.E. from 4th Street S.E. to 6th Street SE
  • 6th Street S.E. from 9th Avenue S.E. to 8th Avenue SE
  • 5th Street S.E. from 9th Avenue S.E. to 7th Avenue SE
