With all this talk about the new pumpkin spice drinks at Starbucks and Tim Hortons, we could not pass up the opportunity to compare the two to see which one tastes better. Starbucks may be the founding father of the PSL, but Timmies is Canada’s first love, so both are definitely strong contenders.

What we discovered is that while one of them is creamier, the other has a more authentic pumpkin spice taste. The drinks we chose to evaluate for this competition were the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte (on ice, because it’s still summer after all), and Tim Hortons’ Pumpkin Spice Iced Capp.

As for the presentation, Starbucks is superior. Both beverages came with whipped topping, but Starbucks lays it on with a little more precision than Tim Hortons. They also sprinkle some cinnamon on top which adds an extra element of flavour.

Tim Hortons drizzles caramel sauce on top, which looks nice but isn’t entirely fitting for the fall-themed beverage. Starbucks uses whipped cream, whereas Tims uses whipped topping from a piping bag, which has a much thicker consistency. Tim Hortons’ topping is much more generous in size so you’ll definitely get a nice gulp of it with every sip.

As for the taste, both are delicious. Tim Hortons’ beverage is much creamier and tastes just like the Iced Capp we know and love, but the pumpkin spice flavours are more subtle. Starbucks definitely came closer to nailing the authentic pumpkin spice flavour, so if you’re really looking for something that tastes just like what it sounds like, this is it.

The final verdict is that there’s something to love and appreciate about both of these drinks. Tim Hortons Pumpkin Spice Iced Capp is undeniably tasty, but the actual pumpkin spice part could be taken up a notch. Starbucks is a whole $2 more expensive for nearly the same size in Ontario (Starbucks tall size is 12 oz. and Tim Hortons small is 10 oz.) and doesn’t have the same level of creamy sweetness, but it’s got the PSL flavour down.

Don’t take it from us, though. You can try them yourself at your nearest location right now!
