This Alberta town with a famous trestle bridge is home to the largest bison statue in Canada

From coast to coast The Great North has scenic destinations, enchanting forests, and beautiful cities, but there’s something special about small towns like Wainwright, Alberta.

Located southeast of Edmonton, this charming town has an interesting history and is surrounded by wildlife. In fact, this is celebrated with a giant statue of a buffalo—the largest in Canada.

Wainwright’s History

Originally established in 1905 as a small homestead named Denwood, Wainwright quickly became familiar with change and growth.

In 1907, the Canadian Government created Buffalo National Park immediately south of town in hopes of preserving the endangered species.

The 160 square mile area was fenced and stocked with several hundred bison from Montana, but it was later turned over to the Department of National Defence (DND) which removed the animals and turned it into a training base for the Canadian Army.

In 1908, with the arrival of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (now CNR) and the construction of the longest freestanding trestle bridge in Canada (at the time), a new townsite just 4 kilometres west of Denwood was also established and given the name we know today.

In addition to its famous Battle River Trestle, the town also became a hub for agriculture, expanded outward, and was incorporated as a town in 1910.

This bridge is still standing today and while it’s now the second longest in Canada, can be partially seen from the Fabyan Campsite.
