The second-highest waterfall in Ontario comes alive with warm colours in the fall

Pay “the Niagara Falls of the North” a visit this fall season. If you haven’t heard about Kakabeka Falls, well today is your lucky day. This massive waterfall is the second highest in Ontario and you can get the best panoramic fall views here.

According to Destination Ontario, standing tall at a whopping 40 meters, Kakabeka Falls is the second-highest waterfall in Ontario.

It’s a lovely fall escape is definitely not a day trip adventure from Toronto because it’ll take you about 15 hours more or less to get there.

That’s why it’s nicknamed “the Niagara of the North”. The provincial park offers stunning scenery, easy hikes and a pedestrian bridge that welcomes visitors to view each side of the falls.

The boardwalk actually wraps around the top of the falls so you can get a nice downward view of the gorge from up top.

These panoramic views have been carved out by the Kaministiquia River over time.

As for trails, there are five to explore:

  • The Boardwalk Trail to the Falls is wheelchair accessible and begins in the parking lot. There are viewing platforms to make photo-taking a breeze.
  • Mountain Portage Trail is also wheelchair accessible and is part of the historic portage that early travelers used to take around Kakabeka Falls, according to Destination Ontario.
  • Little Falls Trail, Poplar Point Trail, Beaver Meadows and River Terrace Trails are more moderate to difficult trails that should be explored by avid hikers.

But here’s something even cooler: at the bottom of the falls, you’ll find 1.6 million-year-old fossils!

The river has cut through the rocks, revealing this ancient treasure.

It’s definitely a sight worth seeing. So if you’re up for the drive or live nearby, Kakabeka Falls is calling your name this fall.
