There’s a town in Alberta with one of the world’s largest pysanka eggs

Just east of Edmonton is a small, quaint town — home to one of the world’s largest psyanka eggs!

Vegreville sits in central Alberta, a town home of one of the world’s largest pysanka eggs, amongst its wide variety of activities and attractions. Whether it’s the natural beauty of the town or its claim to fame, there’s something for everyone.

What to see in the town

First things first, the big attraction is the large easter egg (psyanka) sitting in Vegreville.

This sculpture was designed by Paul Maxym Sembaliuk, a Canadian artist of Ukrainian descent. He built the sculpture in 1973 to symbolize Vegreville’s rich Ukrainian culture. The Pysanka itself is a complicated jigsaw puzzle containing 524 star patterns, 2,208 equilateral triangles, 3,512 visible facets, 6,978 nuts and bolts, and 177 internal struts.

Not only is this psyanka recognized as a unique masterpiece, but it’s also a mark of achievement for mathematical, architectural and engineering firsts. The egg is available for viewing year-round, so there’s no reason not to stop by and take a look!

There’s even Psyanka Putt-Putt for those mini-golf fans. Right in Pysanka Park, you can compete against friends in Psyanka Putt-Putt for just $5!

Another attraction, one of the only ones built in Canada, is Our Lady of the Highway. This is a stunning park and a sculpture of the Virgin Mary. It’s the perfect place to have a picnic or enjoy the serene atmosphere. Although it’s unexpected, it’s a beautiful surprise.

When you find yourself in town, you might get a little hungry after all these endeavours. Don’t worry, Vegreville has more than enough food options to fill your entire family. Places like the Vegreville Diner or Loco Burro will keep you fed on your trip.
