The Vancouver-based consulting firm Resonance Consultancy has released the 2021 World’s Best Cities list, and 6 Canadian spots have landed on it. The global rankings showcase 100 cities with at least a million residents around the world. Let’s see what this year has in store!

Resonance relied on six core categories for the rankings, and get ready for some alliteration. The categories are place, product, people, promotion, prosperity, and programming. Broadly, these categories are meant to capture the whole of the city. For example, prosperity looks into the number of companies in the Fortune 500, but also the city’s income inequality.

The top five on the ranking were London, New York, Paris, Moscow, and Tokyo, so no real surprises there!

We will say though, the ‘promotion’ category reminds us that we really are living in the future. For this one, the focus is almost entirely on virtual engagement- Facebook check-ins, Google analytics, stuff like that. So, if you’re somehow running a city right now, keep this in mind.

Toronto ranked the highest amongst Canadian cities at number 13, while Vancouver landed in the 34th spot. Vancouver specifically was in the middle of the pack for most things but came in number 5 globally in the ‘people’ category, which measures the number of foreign-born residents, as well as educational attainment. Here’s the full roundup of Canadian cities:

13. Toronto
34. Vancouver
41. Montreal
47. Calgary
67. Ottawa
76. Edmonton
