New Year’s Eve is fast approaching and it’s going to be a weird one. With most holiday gatherings with family and friends off-limits because of COVID-19 restrictions, it’s a great year to get creative with your New Year’s Eve celebrations. Luckily for you, we’ve put together a list of great things to do or watch as we say goodbye to the dumpster fire that was 2020.

Attend a New Year’s Eve Zoom Party

If you’re missing the feeling of live music Rock Da House has you covered. Travel in between six different Zoom rooms all playing a different music genre. Whether you’re feeling reggae one moment, old-school jams the next, this free event is going to be full of great music

Watch the Times Square Ball drop

Believe it or not, one of New Year’s Eve’s most time-honoured traditions is still happening. The Times Square Ball drop will be taking place this year like any other, with, of course, a few changes. Check it out online or on TV!

Watch a NYE Justin Bieber concert

In a partnership with T-Mobile, Canada’s own Justin Bieber is going to be doing a virtual New Year’s Eve show! It’s also his first live performance in 3 years. So, if you’re a die-hard Belieber, this is one to check out. You can buy your ticket right here.

Watch CBC’s New Years Eve broadcast

Speaking of Canada, Canada’s own public broadcaster is doing its own New Year’s Eve show! Hosted by the hilarious Rick Mercer in New Brunswick, you’ll be able to watch some great Canadian bands like The Daradanelles, Walk Off The Earth and Bryan Adams all performing across the country.

Have a movie marathon

Lot’s of people have been binging movies and TV shows this holiday, and for a good reason! Revisit the Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings series. Or click the link above to check out the top Canadian films of this year (as decided by TIFF). Ah yes, the joy of cinema!

New Year’s Eve with Russell Peters and Friends

One of Canada’s funniest comedians is doing a special, and hilarious, New Year’s Eve show online. With fellow comedians Jimmy Shubert, Jeff Joe, Crystal Marie Denha, and Jason Collings, Peters is putting on a great show to help you laugh through the pain of 2020.

Play a board game

One of the most classic, casual, and very fun, things to do on New Year’s Eve. Bust out that game of Jenga, Settlers of Catan or Monopoly and play the night away. We can’t guarantee there won’t be an argument between you and your household, but we can guarantee it’ll be a great night.

Order in some great food

In case you didn’t gorge enough this holiday season, why not grab a big New Year’s Eve feast from your favourite local restaurant? So many small and large restaurants across the country could really use the support and, hey, is there anything more fun than eating?

Have an ’80s dance party

Maybe neon colours and New Wave is more your deal. If so, there will be an all-night 80s music video stream taking place on Twitch.tv. Dance to your favourite Duran Duran, New Order, and Madonna. Now that’s a dance party to bring in the new year.

Throw a cocktail party for your household or bubble

Who says you don’t have to drink because you can’t have a big party? Go out and get those special liqueurs and that expensive gin you’ve been eyeing out and create some deliciously boozy creations. There are hundreds of great cocktail recipes online that call for all sorts of funky ingredients. Get creatively tipsy (responsibly of course).

No matter what you decide to do, be sure to be safe, have fun, and celebrate the ending of a terrible year!
