Embrace the outdoors this fall with these 15 activities in Vancouver Island North

The great outdoors are calling, and sometimes the perfect fall getaway is closer than you think.

Vancouver Island North is the perfect getaway for a blend of cultural immersion, artistic inspiration, relaxation, and — perhaps most importantly — wild encounters and natural beauty. What sort of discoveries will you make on and off the beaten path?

We’ll give you a head start with these 15 awesome activities to help you make the most of your autumn journey.

Arts & Outdoors

Alert Bay: You can make a full day out of Alert Bay at Cormorant Island, home to the world’s largest totem pole and plenty of other attractions that detail the area’s rich Indigenous history. Take in some exhibits at the U’mista Cultural Centre, purchase locally made art and jewelry at Culture Shock, or peruse the 16 km of walking trails.

Salmon Spawning: The Quatse and Marble Rivers are spectacular viewpoints during the salmon spawning season, which spans from August to November in North Vancouver Island. You can also learn a thing or two about salmon conservation and education by visiting the Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre in Port Hardy.

Storey’s Beach: Long walk on the beach, anyone? Thanks to the low tide, Storey’s Beach offers miles of sand that seemingly go on forever. While it may be a bit chilly to go swimming or make sandcastles, this area is a popular picnic and walking area year-round. Plus, watching the sunset while you sit by a fire pit is the picture-perfect fall experience.

Sointula & Malcolm Island Popular island destinations in this charming seaside town include Bere Point, Mitchell Bay, and the Point Lighthouse, but adventurers particularly love the unique hikes. Mateoja Heritage Trail takes hikers on a trip back through time, and the Beautiful Bay Trail winds through a rainforest on a rocky ridge. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a passing pod of orcas from your view of the ocean!

San Josef Bay: This breathtaking beach in Cape Scott Provincial Park on Vancouver Island is one of the most incredible remote beaches you’ll ever see! Once you take the 45-minute hike, you’ll be able to spend hours exploring sea stacks and caves atop the soft white sand, surrounded by wilderness. This natural paradise is a can’t-miss for avid explorers.

Food & Drink

Devil’s Bath Brewing Co.: You can expect brews, bites, and banter at this family-founded Port McNeill brewery. High-quality beer meets a laid-back atmosphere, and food options like tacos, artisan pizzas, and shareable bites only elevate the experience. We recommend the beer flight so you can taste a bit of everything!

Cafe Guido: This downtown Porty Hardy cafe is the perfect spot to stop for a quick bite or a hot drink while you’re out and about. While you’re at it, explore the Book Nook downstairs, because nothing elevates a specialty coffee like a five-star read.

nax’id’ Pub: Located in the Kwa’lilas Hotel, the menu at nax’id’ Pub utilizes fresh local ingredients in an array of dishes inspired by First Nations cuisine. Once you try their bison burger, you may never enjoy a standard beef burger the same.

Sporty Bar & Grill: This sports bar has it all: classic West Coast dining, happy hour, pool, and special events. Oh, and of course, sports. View your favourite game or catch up with friends over eats like chicken wings and fried pickles — whatever floats your boat, this pub has you covered.

Market Street Cafe: This is the cutest little cafe with fresh breads, jams, baked goods, and an all-day breakfast. Lunch is served after 11 AM, and takeout is encouraged!

Where to Stay

Cluxewe Resort: Situated on the ancestral land of the Kwakiutl First Nation, Cluxewe Resort is proudly Indigenous-owned and operated. Bring a tent, book an RV site, or make the most of the experience by resting your head at a serene waterfront cottage.

Ecoscape Cabins: Close to beaches, rainforests, and hiking trails, Ecoscape Cabins offer front-door access to all the natural beauty North Vancouver has to offer. These environmentally friendly cabins combine modern convenience with a cozy rustic vibe to create the ultimate wilderness escape.

Seine Boat Inn: As the name suggests, the Seine Boat Inn stands along the shoreline of Alert Bay, just steps away from the ferry dock, shops, and local restaurants. The spectacular views and the wind beneath your feet create a seaside feeling like no other.

Kwa’lilas Hotel: Luxury and history meet at Kwa’lilas, Port Hardy’s premier destination hotel, where guests can enjoy a curated selection of authentic local Indigenous arts, food, and culture. Kwa’lilas is a Kwak̓wala word that means “a place to sleep,” so it’s only fitting that you find rest here after a day of exploration on North Vancouver Island.

Telegraph Cove Resort: From cozy cabins and historic homes to modern condominium suites and new lodge rooms, the Telegraph Cove Resort offers something for every taste. Experience authentic seaside living on one of the last boardwalk settlements left on Vancouver Island.
