Alberta’s sunflower fields are about to bloom and here’s where to see them

Your camera roll is about to get a whole lot brighter because Alberta’s sunflower season is almost here. Soon, fields across the province will be covered in a yellow sea of flowers, making the perfect backdrop for a scenic drive, a photo stop, or a slow afternoon exploring somewhere new.

But the blooms only last for a short time, so it’s worth planning your visit before they disappear. Luckily, there are plenty of places across the province to catch them. We’ve rounded up five sunflower fields in Alberta that deserve a spot on your summer bucket list.

Bowden Sunmaze

If walking through a sunflower field sounds fun, imagine turning it into a maze. Bowden Sunmaze at Eagle Creek Farms lets visitors wander through a maze where the goal is to explore the paths, take in the views, and make their way out.

When: Opens early August
Time: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: 34530 Range Rd. 14, Red Deer County, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $8

The Sunny Spot

Located just outside Drumheller, The Sunny Spot is a must-visit once sunflower season arrives. In mid-August, the farm’s sunflower field comes to life, and guests have the opportunity to walk through rows of blooming sunflowers and snap some amazing photos.

Beyond the sunflower field, The Sunny Spot also offers plenty of other things to enjoy, including mini golf, fresh food, and a pumpkin patch in the fall.

When: Open Wednesday to Sunday
Time: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Where: 5225 AB-10, Drumheller, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $10

Calgary Farmyard

The Calgary Farmyard is a great option if you want to see sunflowers without heading too far outside of the city. The farm’s 2.5-acre sunflower field typically blooms in mid-to-late August, giving visitors a chance to walk through, take photos, and even take part in a u-pick experience.

When: Open Friday to Sunday (sunflower field opens in mid-July)
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Where: 284022 Township Rd. 224, Rocky View County, Alta.
Cost: $25.95 +GST for kids, $29.95 +GST for adults

Lethbridge Corn Maze

The Lethbridge Corn Maze is bringing more than just its maze back this summer. In August, visitors can also check out the attractions in the one-acre sunflower field, which adds a bright pop of colour to the farm. After wandering through the sunflowers, guests can make their way through the 10-acre corn maze, visit the petting zoo, or take a ride down the giant slide.

When: Opens mid-August
Time:
Where: 109051 Range Rd. 22-4, Lethbridge County, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $14

Kraay Family Farm

Missed out on the earlier sunflower blooms? Kraay Family Farm’s Sunflower Days is a later-season option for anyone still looking to get their sunflower fix. The annual event invites guests to wander through the fields and pick sunflower stems to take home while the flowers are in season.

When: Open Monday to Saturday (Sunflower Days runs in September)
Time: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: 40314 Range Rd. 27-3, Lacombe, Alta.
