Just when you thought the University of Toronto has topped enough rankings, they’ve just done it again. An annual report by Research Infosource Inc. has ranked U of T as the number one research university in the country.
The ranking is based on the research incomes that each school earned in the 2020 fiscal year, which includes grants, contributions, or contracts from all sources outside of the school itself.
The report then groups the universities into three distinct categories — Medical, Comprehensive, and Undergraduate.
U of T earned the number one spot with a total of $1.23 billion of research income, an increase of 13% from the previous year. According to the report, U of T “reported the highest Corporate research income among its Medical peers.”

Another Ontario university, the University of Waterloo, got a shoutout in the report for earning over $211 million throughout the year for its research, the highest spot among Canada’s comprehensive universities.
Across Canada, only 22 universities managed to crack $100 million in research income in 2020, gaining membership into the prestigious $100 Million Club created by Research Infosource.
While 31 universities saw an increase in their research income in 2020, 19 schools saw their incomes decline. Ryerson University, in particular, saw significant growth in its research income at $105.6 million, an increase of 32.7%.
This ranking is one of many in recent months where U of T has earned top scores. In August, the university landed in 22nd place on the prestigious ShanghaiRanking’s top 100 ranking of the world’s best universities for 2021.
In fact, it prides itself on being the highest-ranked Canadian university, placing higher than most other schools in the country in several international reports.
