The town of Banff has voted to reduce speed limits to 30 km/h on all streets

Driving through the mountains? Watch how much metal you’re putting to the pedal because the town of Banff has reduced their speed limit on all streets in hopes of keeping everyone (including wildlife) safe and upright.

As per a unanimous decision made in council this week, the town will slow to a speed of 30 km/h (10 under its residential limit) as soon as next month.

“Slower is safer,” said Mayor Corrie DiManno during the meeting. “In a community with four square kilometres, I don’t understand the need for speed,” and as it turns out, neither do many living in the area.

Over the last few months, the town has received several e-mails from its residents in support of the decision, with many sharing how much better they’d feel riding their bike through town if visitors were required to drive slower.

“Jaywalking is a major issue in the town of Banff and reducing the speed limit in all areas helps lessen the probability of an injury or fatality,” wrote one resident. “I especially think reducing speed limits is needed to keep people and wildlife safe in the winter months.”

As of right now, there’s no official date as to when the signs will be changed out – but we’ll keep you all updated!

Until then, be smart and drive safely. It’s an icy wonderland out there, folks, and you never know who or what may decide to cross the road and when.
