Are you ready for one of the most epic golden hours of the year? The city is about to experience the “Torontohenge”, a rare phenomenon that happens when the sunset aligns with the city’s east and west streets! It’s going to be one of the best Toronto sunsets of the year and you won’t want to miss it.
Here’s what to know about the “Torontohenge” and how to see it for yourself!
Civil engineer Ralph Bouwmeester specializes in tracking the sun and shadows and keeps a detailed account of the past and present Torontohenges including when the upcoming sunrises and sunsets are expected for the year ahead.
“Torontohenge is the name given for the phenomenon that occurs four times per year when the sun rises or sets in line with Toronto’s major east-west streets downtown,” shares Bouwmeester.
“The event, twice per year at sunrise, and twice at sunset, gives photographers great opportunities to capture the sun as its top edge grazes the horizon between the canyon walls of buildings on either side of the street,” he continues.
The first of the Toronto sunsets aka “Torontohenge” was in February and the final one of the year is coming up on October 25th, 2024.
According to Bouwmeester, you can expect the sunset at 6:17 PM EDT.
