Another reason to be proud of our city. Toronto has earned itself a top spot in The Economist’s Safe Cities Index for 2021, ranking in second place out of 60 major urban areas worldwide. Canada’s biggest city got a score of 82.2, right on the heels of Copenhagen’s number one score of 82.4. The report is released annually by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and it analyzes the cities based on a variety of factors.
The Economist says that this year’s report is based on 76 sub indicators grouped under 5 domains — digital security, health security, infrastructure security, environmental security, and personal security. Toronto is the only Canadian city included in the 2021 ranking.
The report explains that the pandemic has shifted our priorities for security, as it is “the first global pandemic to strike humanity since we became a predominantly urban species.” Health security is more important than ever, and digital security has taken on new significance with the rise of working from home.

According to the ranking, Toronto is a global leader in environmental and infrastructure security, coming in 2nd and 4th place, respectively. And Toronto has actually climbed up the ranking over the years — the city came in 6th place in 2019, in 4th place in 2017, and in 18th place in 2015.
The top-ranking cities in this report all have two things in common — higher “income and transparency.” Higher income helps the city fund initiatives to increase safety, and “clean government is a fundamental requirement for a city to be safe,” the report says.
This isn’t the first time this year that the 6ix got global recognition. Toronto landed in 13th place in a January ranking of the world’s best cities in 2021. In April, Maclean’s named it one of the best communities in Canada. And it goes without saying at this point that the University of Toronto is one of the world’s best schools.
